I'm back.... and it's time for the 2015 sshg_giftfest!

...and it could not have come a better moment. In part due to the change in seasons (I am *so* not ready summer to be over) in part due to things being utterly bonkers at my job, and finally because I'm in difficult place, plot-wise in my WIP, Hallelujah-  https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10155733/1/Hallelujah - but I've just not been able to write a bloody thing the last three weeks. Enter the sshg_giftfest: having something completely new and different to work on is finally breaking through my writer's block. Moreover, reading through everyone's wished-for prompts is fun... and oh, to have the time to do several of them! Then, of course, there is anticipation of wondering which one of *my* prompts will be chosen, and how the mystery author will interpret it. All in all, it's good stuff, and I'm hoping that it will continue to inspire the muse.

So... fingers crossed. It worked out well for me last year; not only did I receive a fantastic prompt from irishredlass *and* got a wonderful story from celestialbeing1, but it also really helped me with my WIP. And hey, if all else fails, my weekends wont be spent in total frustration... it's officially football season. Go Hawks!

p.s. And for those of you that read my story from last year, the final and expanded version of Mistress of the Stacks can be found here- https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10962196/1/Mistress-of-the-Stacks

p.p.s.- today is the last day for submissions for the sshg_giftfest, so come play!
I hate waiting...unless it will annoy someone else. Then I love it. Oppositional Defiance Disorder much? Quite frankly, waiting for the reveals of the sshg_giftfest has been rather... painful. Naturally, I wanted to know who wrote my wonderful story Guess Who's Coming To Dinner? and I also wanted to finally be able to respond to all of the lovely comments that I had received on my own story Mistress of the Stacks that was writen for irishredlass.

But the reveals have finally been posted, and I now can commence with the fangirl squealing- none other than the fantastic celestialbeing1 wrote my story. If you've not had a chance to do so, go check it out post-haste! It's incredibly funny, has a delightfully smutty centre, and still manages to tug at the heartstrings.

As for my story, I'm looking forward to doing some judicious editing and will be reposting the final results on FFnet. I was lucky, and got a great prompt from irishredlass; as happy as I am with the final product, I want to really shine it up (basically, you can picture me as Gollum, and I've been sitting in a lonely corner of the internet whispering 'my precious' for waaaay too long now). I'll be adding a chapter from Hermione's POV in the 1998 timeline, and reworking a bit of the flow. So if you've read the story, and have any constructive criticisms, or have any interest in acting as a beta, let me know. I've only been writing fanfiction for about a year now, and it's important to me to craft the best possible writing I can.

Mad thanks and props go to mods of the sshg_giftfest, amorette and delphipsmith who organized an amazing event. I've learned a ton, and connected with some really lovely people thanks to the fest, and I can't wait to do it again!

Sigh. Always back to the waiting ;)

Reading other people's writing-- especially when it's a ship you know and like-- can be both inspiring and challenging. There is that lovely feeling when you read a unusually good piece that is like meeting friends unexpectedly after a long absence; when someone fleshes out a character in a new or particularly insightful way, I find myself challenged to reconsider my own head cannon, and the way that I am writing a situation or story.

My OTP is SSHG. The combination of smug and swot, with a healthy dose of angst is my personal form of crack-fiction. I've been looking forward to the postings of the sshg_giftfest stories since I've heard about them in mid-August. Now that they are here, I am really looking forward to reading how people have interpreted the gift requests, and am really hoping that so much new stuff will serve as an impetus for my own stuff.

As I mentioned in my only other post, I currently have two stories posted (shortly to be three, once my own submission to the sshg_giftfest goes up).

My completed story is called "Bubble Gum and Broken Heels" and can be found here- https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10482007/1/Bubble-Gum-and-Broken-Heels

It's a story of Snape, but told mostly through the eyes of Alice Longbottom. I was inspired by the thought of Snape and Alice Longbottom being friends, and wanted to explore the interwar years a bit. Of everything I've written, I think it's the best. I wrote the first line- "The black haired boy reminded Alice rather strongly of a snarling gargoyle; his face was a study in hard, angry angles, and his body was hunched protectively over a study carrel like the numerous chimera that lurked high upon the outer walls of Hogwarts."- using fridge magnets, and the story just seemed to fall onto the page during a period when I was having issues with writers' block.

My second story (and WIP) is a traditional SSHG tale- "Eight years after the Fall of Voldemort, a mystery illness is stalking the wizarding world. Hermione Granger was the most brilliant witch of her age until she ran away. Even in death, Severus Snape was a reviled and polarizing figure. What happens when they return to face all they left behind?"- and I've had a blast writing it. It's fun to go back and read the earlier chapters and see how both my writing and the characters have grown. If you are interested, it is also posted on FFnet at https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10155733/1/Hallelujah

So props to all you out there are likewise reading and writing! It's amazing to see all of the creativity that goes into peoples' work, and I hope that people enjoy my stuff as much as I do theirs.

Who am I?

Who am I? Ah, that age-old question that haunts us all. Thankfully, I am not interested in answering the the wider implications of that query: for the purposes of this self-indulgent platform, I am a 30-something fanfic writer that was drawn here, much like a moth to the flame by the lovely SSHG community.

I fell down the rabbit hole of Harry Potter fanfiction purely by chance and now find myself furiously typing away on a long WIP and several plot bunnies. While I've always written drabbles here and there, my background in RL is academia. Primarily, I research areas of public and reproductive health; I specialize in the Middle East and Africa. I currently work in education. Should you be writing on any of those topics and have questions, feel free to contact me.

The story I'm currently working on came to me whilst listening to Jeff Buckley's wonderful version of "Hallelujah". I'm still angry over that horrid epilogue some six years later-- there is no chance that having experienced all of the trauma our erstwhile characters would simply fall in line, end up with their school-yard loves, and live happily ever after-- so my story is an attempt to correct that monumental error. Also, I find Dumbledore to be a Machiavellian and unredeemable ass.

I have an unhealthy obsession with music, photography and love to read fantasy and sci-fi. My favorite show growing up was the X-Files; currently, I'm a Doctor Who fan. I love American Football, and am basking in the joy of a Super Bowl win.
